Abstract
Algerian women of various ages and social, religious and political persuasions meet up at a hammam, their only escape from the harsh man’s world outside. Here they can smoke in secret and – also in a metaphorical sense – bare all. It’s not only their scars – caused by attacks from jealous men – that are revealed, but also their closely guarded secrets and desires. But even the women’s last remaining place of freedom is now under threat from men driven by Islamic fanaticism...
The film is based on a play by the director Rayhana, for which she won the Jürgen Bansemer & Ute Nyssen Dramatists’ Prize in 2014 and which was performed at Stadttheater Ingolstadt in 2016. Rayhana is originally from Algeria, but she had to leave her homeland because she received death threats from Islamists due to her activism against the oppression of Muslim women in the country. She said the following in an interview for a French newspaper: “A woman also has the right to education and a career. But her civic awareness and democratic will are being suppressed by traditional religion.”
