Abstract

Tunis in 2010, shortly before the fall of the Ben Ali dictatorship. 18-year-old Farah has just finished her school-leaving exams and her family hopes that she will study medicine and be a doctor. Farah has other ideas, however: as the singer in a rock band, her political lyrics rebel against the oppressive constraints of the authoritarian Tunisian society. In her first feature-length film, Tunisian director Leyla Bouzid has painted a vivid portrait of a young woman who fights for freedom of speech and against male-dominated structures and, in doing so, winds up in a conflict against the system’s forces of repression.
The film was shown at a number of festivals, including Venice, Toronto, Rotterdam, Busan and Dubai, has already received more than 25 awards, and had a successful run in Tunisian cinemas.
